Skinoren is a topical cream used to treat acne. Among its ingredients, Skinoren cream contains the active ingredient azelaic acid. Azelaic acid has a dual mode of action; it reduces the growth of keratin cells that block pores and oil glands causing spots, as well as kills bacteria that live on your skin and can be responsible for acne. It can also be used for rosacea and hyperpigmentation.

1 g of Skinoren cream contains 200 mg (20% w/w) azelaic acid.

Directions for use

Skinoren cream should be applied to the affected skin areas twice a day (morning and evening) and rubbed in gently. As a guide, 2.5 cm (approx. 0.5 g) of cream is sufficient for the entire facial area. If other acne areas in addition to the face require treatment, e.g. the chest and back, the amount of cream should be adjusted accordingly.

Patients with sensitive skin should be advised to use Skinoren only once daily (in the evening) for the first week of treatment, then increase to twice daily applications.

Before applying Skinoren cream, the skin should be thoroughly cleansed with clean water and dried. A mild skin cleansing agent can be used.

The duration of use of Skinoren Cream may vary from patient to patient and also depends on the severity of the acne. Typically, a marked improvement becomes apparent after about 4 weeks. To achieve the best results, Skinoren Cream should be used continuously over a period of several months.

It is important to continue using Skinoren Cream regularly throughout the treatment. However, if intolerable skin irritation occurs, the amount of cream per application should be reduced or the frequency of use of Skinoren Cream should be reduced to once a day until the irritation stops. If necessary, treatment may need to be temporarily interrupted for a few days.
